Brief Description

As a maintenance apprentice within the Barrett Steel Group, you will be trained to work in the world of manufacturing & steel stockholding. The initial training will be broad based leading to a first appointment as a multi skilled maintenance engineer.

Qualifications Required

Essential ? 3 or 5 GCSEs at 9 ? 4 / A* - C (5 or above preferred), must include maths, English language, and ideally Science, or equivalent related qualification.

- Good timekeeping and attendance
- Conscientious with good attention to detail
- An interest in Engineering with career objective to working in an Engineering position in the future
- Willingness to learn new skills

Skills Required

- Excellent communication skills
- Able to demonstrate a clear interest to work in the manufacturing sector

Training to be Provided

? Engineering Basic Skills training ? off the job full time at Make UK in Aston, Birmingham
? NVQ Level 3 in Engineering
? A Technical Certificate (BTEC Diploma Level 3 in Engineering)
? In house training in line with your requirements.

Future Prospects

Barrett's continues to develop and expand its asset care department and a longer term prospect who be the possible management of both the divisional asset care team and the group asset care team.

Vacancy Detail

As an apprentice, you will attend the MAKE UK engineering training centre to complete your foundation skills and work towards your Level 3 BTEC in Mechatronics. On your return to Company you will work towards an NVQ at level 3, and dependent on your commitment and performance, have the option of working towards a higher education qualification.

The 2 main areas are:
- Maintenance, to keep the plant and equipment running, preforming both preventative servicing and breakdown repairs
- Technical, to ensure quality and efficiency in all areas of the business.

During the apprenticeship you will have the opportunity to rotate around the business, gain a better understanding of how the business works and learn new skills in each area.

A key area will be working with the current Engineering team on 11 state of the art tube laser cutting machines at various sites in the UK. Barrett's currently have the largest tube laser machine in Europe. The Jumbo has the capacity to laser cut tubes up to a diameter of 508 mm and a length of 18 metres.

Barrett's are also looking developing their tube manipulation department which will involve automation between a tube laser and a bending machine using robotic technology
Working alongside the Barrett Asset Care team you will be carrying out PPM on the company?s tube laser machines, tube manipulation machines and tube cutting saws.

You will spend time in all operational departments to ensure a full grounding and understanding of the Barrett Steel Tubes business.
