Brief Description

We are looking to recruit a Mechanical Engineering Apprentice to join our growing Power Transmission Engineering Company.

Qualifications Required

5 GCSE, or equivalent, Maths, English and Science grade C (4) or above.

Training to be Provided

This 4 year programme will include:
• Engineering Basic Skills training – off the job full time at Make UK in Aston, Birmingham
• NVQ Level 3 in Engineering
• A Technical Certificate (BTEC Diploma Level 3 in Engineering)
• In house training in line with your requirements.

T D Cross & Sons was founded in 1870 in Birmingham, concentrating in the production of bicycle components under the direction of the Cross family. They moved to the current factory site in 1950 and developed into production of a popular range of roller chain sprockets and gearing. The competitive pricing and quality of product soon established the company as a major supplier to both Agricultural and Industrial markets

Cross & Morse was established in 1984 through the amalgamation of two long standing and well respected companies in the Power Transmission Industry, T D Cross and Morse Chain.

In 1987 Cross & Morse closed the Letchworth plant and centralised all production at the 10,000 sq metre factory in Great Barr, Birmingham where current production of Roller Chains, Sprockets, Gears, Timing Belt Pulleys, Torque Limiters, Sprag Clutches and other specialised power transmission equipment is undertaken.

We are looking to recruit a Mechanical Engineering Apprentice to join our growing Power Transmission Engineering Company.

Job Details:

The first year of your apprenticeship will be based at MAKE UK based in Aston. For the second year onwards you will be based on site at our Great Barr factory with one day per week training release to MAKE UK.

During your apprenticeship you will cover all manufacturing areas of the company which include:


• Turning Both CNC and Manual
• Milling Both CNC and Manual
• Grinding Both CNC and Manual
• Gear cutting
• Broaching
• Welding
• Press Tool Work
• Assembly

Processes involve the manufacturing from raw material and components to produce sprockets, gears, racks, pulleys, couplings, clutches and torque limiters supplied to a wide range of industries worldwide. During your apprenticeship you will also cover CNC programming/tooling, production control, inspection procedures and CAD.

We are looking for candidates with a strong interest in engineering who enjoy a challenge and are conscientious, reliable (excellent timekeeping and attendance essential) and self motivated.

Once working on our site, apprentices participate in the company’s profit related pay scheme in addition to their weekly salary.

Other Information
