Brief Description

We are looking for the next generation of talented Technical Multi-Skilled Maintenance Engineers to enhance the current level of skills at CHEP. The apprenticeship position will give you the opportunity to develop in a high tech environment covering a wide range of disciplines.

Qualifications Required

3 GCSEs at 9 – 4 / A* - C (5 or above preferred), must include maths, English language, and ideally Science, or equivalent related qualification.

Training to be Provided

Together with invaluable commercial and practical experience, you’ll gain several academic and vocational qualifications throughout your time with us, which are fully paid for, including: 
● Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Foundation Competence)  – off the job full time at Make UK in Aston, Birmingham in year 1
● Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Competence) 
● Level 3 BTEC Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Knowledge)
● In house training in line with your requirements.

We are looking for the next generation of talented Technical Multi-Skilled Maintenance Engineers to enhance the current level of skills at CHEP. The apprenticeship position will give you the opportunity to develop in a high tech environment covering a wide range of disciplines.


You will be highly trained to work in the world of manufacturing. The initial training will be broad based and could lead to a first appointment as a Multi-Skilled Maintenance Technician.

Working under supervision you will work towards being responsible for the following tasks:

• Complying with legislative and industry best practice.
• Performing proactive and reactive maintenance.
• Follow all Health & Safety procedures.
• Maintain electrical and mechanical equipment.
• Seek ways to improve all processes and procedures relating to maintenance.
• Identification of failure modes and trends, complete root cause analysis processes.
• Identify life cycle issues and raise these with recommendations.
• Work Safely following detailed risk assessments.
• Report maintenance tasks on maintenance systems using accurate and descriptive problem reporting.


Working with our Training Provider (College) and work mentors you will develop skills and knowledge on the following tasks:

• Perform first line routine mechanical maintenance, including removing and replacing components, cleaning, lubrication, inspection, and fault finding.
• Maintain fluid power systems.
• Perform first line electrical maintenance, including testing, fault finding, repairing, and replacing components.
• Understand the principles of electrical machines, testing electrical equipment and circuits.
• Understand the operation of process controllers within an engineered system.
• Commission and perform maintenance of instrumentation/process control systems.
• Perform maintenance of programmable control systems
• Understand the requirements of electrical installations.
• General maintenance workshop skills, e.g., grinding, drilling, machining etc.
• Computer proficient including basic network understanding.

Other Information

• Candidates will have to live in provided accommodation when attending the college for technical training (except for those who live locally). Costs will be paid by the company. Candidates will have to travel back to accommodation on the Sunday to be ready for early Monday start but will have a half day on Friday to travel home.

• After initial training at the service centre and college, you will be placed onto a shift pattern to match your mentor, this is be recompensed with a shift premium.

• During the programme in year 3 & 4 you will travel to other sites in UK for short block sessions to expand your skills and knowledge.
