Brief Description

Our service engineers are required to carry out all tasks which may be necessary to keep an overhead crane working. You will be fitting, commissioning and then maintaining the cranes that we manufacture. We feel that a crane service engineer is one of the most rounded engineers there is, to that end they are never out of work.

Qualifications Required

GCSE:
Grade 4 / C / Pass on Maths and English Language

Also a pass grade in a level 2 (GCSE / BTEC) science based subject will be viewed favourably. This could be science, physics, engineering, design tech or any other STEM based subject.

Personal Qualities

• The site work includes working at height, although all PPE is provided it is essential that the applicant is not afraid of heights and understands the need to concentrate and carry out the instructions they are given.
• It is not a pre-requisite for the applicant to be able to drive (it would be an advantage) but they must have an intention to learn to do this (at their own cost) as our engineers work all over the country.

Skills Required

• Due to the type of course work it is essential that the applicant has a good standard of written English, as the apprentice gains experience, he/she will also be required to write reports which are sent direct to our customers.
• A reasonable standard of mathematics is also necessary, addition, subtraction, and simple multiplication and division.
• Other than this we require the candidate to be willing to learn the required on the job skills.

Training to be Provided

Together with invaluable commercial and practical experience, you’ll gain several academic and vocational qualifications throughout your time with us, which are fully paid for, including: 
● Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Foundation Competence)  – off the job full time at Make UK in Aston, Birmingham in year 1
● Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Competence) 
● Level 3 BTEC Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Knowledge)
● In house training in line with your requirements.

Future Prospects

Following your training you will be considered to be a Service Engineer.

Our current service engineers are currently earning between £35,000 and £45,000 per annum basic, plus overtime, plus company vehicle.

We feel that a crane service engineer is one of the most rounded engineers there is, to that end they are never out of work.

Vacancy Detail

Granada Cranes Ltd, the countries largest independent manufacturer of Electric Overhead travelling Cranes is actively seeking people to join our apprentice service engineer training scheme.
The successful candidate will be trained by our training provider as well as in house, sometimes in the training school and at other times out on site at our customers’ premises where they will be working alongside our experienced service engineers.

The Work
• Our service engineers are required to carry out all tasks which may be necessary to keep an overhead crane working. To this end it is essential that the apprentice is comfortable working at height. To gain access to the cranes we generally use MEWPS (Mobile Elevating Working Platforms) AKA scissor lifts and cherry pickers, again full training will be given, and the apprentice will take the IPAF test. IPAF is the internationally recognized MEWP license.
• The work will include fitting out new cranes in our Oldbury works. This will require the use of electric drills and taps and manual tools to mount control panels and either c rail systems or cable chains which carry the wiring to the hoist unit and also wiring and connecting limits.
• Installing and commissioning the cranes on site, installing bus bar system which supply the power to the cranes.
• Once in operation the cranes require servicing, which includes receiving a thorough visual inspection and brakes being adjusted so that they work at their optimum level.
• Attending breakdowns which may be either electrical or mechanical, broken wires or burnt-out contactors to seized bearing or broken gearbox shafts.

The Training
• Full training will be given in the safe use of hand tools and electric drills and grinders. You will be taught how to understand complex electrical systems, how to work safely on electrical control systems and how to fault find using electrical multimeters.
• The training also includes installing and programming variable frequency drives and will shortly include a PLC programming course.
• The training will also include working on mechanical drive systems, gearboxes and replacing crane wheels, brakes, steel wire ropes and load chains.
• There will also be opportunities to learn how to weld using Mig welding systems and to flame cut using Oxy/Acetylene burning tackle.
• The training also includes inspecting slings and chains.


Personal Protective Equipment
The apprentice will be supplied with any PPE which the company deems necessary but as a minimum will include Safety Boots/Shoes, Hard Hat, Safety Harness, Overalls, Eye Protection, Hearing Protection and gloves.

Uniform
The company provides all employees with a uniform which consists of work trousers, polo shirts, jumpers or hoodies, or fleece jackets. It is the employee’s responsibility to ensure that these are kept clean, and the employee is presentable.

Other Information

At times you may be required to work away from home and when this happens the company will provide Bed and Breakfast in a comfortable hotel (usually a Premier Inn) and a reasonable meal allowance.
